Leadership skill is most crucial for success, says 45% workforce: JobBuzz Survey

Leadership skill is the most important to succeed at the workplace, approved 45% of the workforce in a survey conducted by JobBuzz, a career research platform of TimesJobs.com, which gives jobseekers the information to make intelligent career decisions.
The JobBuzz survey was conducted amongst employees to determine the key skills that are required to have a successful career in that organization. Each employee had to identify three skills for his or her organization. The survey had 30,800 respondents covering more than 2500 companies present in India.
Out of 92466 responses received, 20874 professionals named initiative skillfulness as the second most crucial skill in the survey. Relationship management bagged the third position during the survey with 19106 votes.
The JobBuzz survey highlighted that skill such as team-work, domain expertise, out-of-box thinking and analytical skills jointly had 11% share in the top skills to succeed at workplace list.
In the industry-wise analysis, it appeared that largely employees from key industries such as IT and Telecom, ITeS/BPO and BFSI consider leadership skill as the most vital skill to succeed in their respective industries. Professionals from key segments, namely Retail (4%), Oil and Gas (3%) and Construction/Real Estate (3%) also voted in favorable numbers.
A similar workforce trend was also observed for initiative-taking and relationship management skill, where healthcare services and consultancy services were the difference makers.
According to the survey, BFSI (11%), Sales and Business Development (8%) and Engineering (8%) are three such professions where these top three skills are most required to be successful at workplace.
In view of the Indian workforce, leadership skill is most useful at the executive to assistant (38%) level followed by assistant manager to manager level (34%), which is essentially the middle level of the workforce hierarchy. An equal share of 12% is attributed to entry level and senior manager to general manager level. However, taking initiative and relationship management skills become all the more important at entry level to ensure a successful career.
In a nutshell, the Indian workforce seems convinced that the effective power play of their leadership qualities, initiative taking abilities and relationship management skill will help them to climb the success leader in their organization.

Firefox 15 arrives with protection against add-on memory leakage

In its fight to keep Firefox in the mix as a top web browser, Mozilla has devoted a great deal of time and effort in recent builds to making sure it’s frugal about memory consumption. With the browser itself already sporting a greatly-reduced memory footprint and plug-ins safely stashed outside the main process, Firefox 15 has now gone stable and brought its add-on leakage-stopping powers to the millions of loyal Mozilla users around the globe.
The new memory management feature is built right in to the browser, too, so you don’t even need to wait for your favorite add-ons to be updated. Just install Firefox 15, and it’ll automatically keep tabs. When an add-on appears to be running wild, the ‘Fox will step in and clean up the mess.
Another big change in Firefox 15 is the evolution of its silent updating abilities. They began taking shape in version 12, but now the experience is much more Chrome-like. Updates will now be downloaded and staged in a temporary location and then quietly copied over when Firefox is restarted. At last you can kiss the “Firefox is installing updates” window goodbye.

Firefox 15 also offers some multimedia enhancements in the form of Opus audio support and improved WebGL performance — thanks to support for compressed textures. And just like Google Chrome, Firefox now supports SPDY V3, the latest iteration of Google’s web content transport protocol. It’s also worth noting that Firefox 15 for Android introduces the revamped tablet interface — so make sure you update it, too.

Kindle Fire is sold out forever, Kindle Fire 2 expected next week

Amazon has released a rather bizarre bit of news today. The Kindle Fire has completely sold out. You can no longer buy one, and the wording of the press release suggests there won’t be anymore manufactured.
In nine months on sale Amazon claims to have secured 22 percent of tablet sales in the US. With that in mind, Amazon will definitely be selling more Kindle Fires, however, the next one you’ll be able to buy will probably have a “2″ at the end of the name.
Jeff Bezos said that the Kindle Fire is Amazon’s most successful product launch so far and that there’s “an exciting roadmap ahead.” He also confirmed Amazon will continue to offer hardware, but there’s no detail beyond that.
Even so, why has Amazon chosen to announce its tablet has sold out completely rather than continuing to manufacture it or having the Kindle Fire 2 ready to announce? With no Amazon tablet available to buy now, and no news on when the next one will arrive, potential Kindle Fire buyers will go elsewhere.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens next, but there is some ray of hope for potential Kindle Fire customers: Amazon is holding an event next week on September 6. There was speculation that event would be a new Kindle Fire, but this news all but confirms that has to be the case. And if it is, Amazon has to have it available to sell immediately.
If Amazon wanted to get our attention this press release certainly worked, but it has left us scratching our heads a bit as to why they’d announce it in this way.

Opportunity cost principle

Opportunity costs are cash outflows prevented by taking one course of action instead

of another. They include returns, which the entrepreneur could have earned in

alternative use of his services and capital.

The concept of opportunity cost occupies a very important place in modern economic

analysis. The opportunity costs or alternative costs are the return from the second best

use of the firm’s resources which the firm forgoes in order to avail itself of the return

from the best use of the resources. To take an example, a farmer who is producing

wheat can also produce potatoes with the same factors. Therefore, the opportunity cost

of a quintal of wheat is the amount of the output of potatoes given up. Thus we find that

opportunity cost of anything is the next best alternative that could be produced instead

by the same factors or by an equivalent group of factors, costing the same amount of

money. Two points must be noted in this definition. Firstly, the opportunity cost of

anything is only the next best alternative foregone. Secondly, in the above definition is

the addition of the qualification or by an equivalent group of factors costing the same

amount of money.

The alternative or opportunity cost of a good can be given a money value. In order to

produce a good the producer has to employ various factors of production and have to

pay them sufficient prices to get their services. These factors have alternative uses.

The factor must be paid atleast the price they are able to obtain in the alternative uses.

Suppose a businessman can buy either a washing machine or a press machine with his

limited resources and suppose that he can earn annually Rs. 40,000 and 60,000

respectively from the two alternatives. A rational businessman will certainly buy a press

machine that gives him a higher return. But, in the process of earning Rs. 60,000 he

has foregone the opportunity to earn Rs. 40,000 annually from the washing machine.

Thus, Rs. 40,000 is his opportunity cost or alternative cost. The difference between

actual and opportunity costs is called economic rent or economic rent or economic

profit. For example, economic profit from press machine in the above case is Rs.

60,000 –Rs. 4000 = Rs. 20,000. So long as economic profit is above zero, it is rational

to invest resources in press machine.

(b) Equi-marginal principle

The equi-marginal principle was originally associated with consumption theory and the

law is called ‘the law of equi-marginal utility’. The law of equi-marginal utility states that

a utility maximizing consumer distributes his consumption expenditure between various

goods and services he/she consumes in such a way that the marginal utility derived

from each unit of expenditure on various goods and services is the same. The pattern

of consumer’s expenditure maximizes a consumer’s total utility.

The law of equi-marginal principle has been applied to the allocation of resources

between their alternative uses with a view to maximizing profit in case a firm carries out

more than one business activity. This principle suggests that available resources

(inputs) should be so allocated between the alternative options that the marginal

productivity gain (MP) from the various activities are equalized. For example, suppose

a firm has a total capital of Rs. 100 million which it has the option of spending on three

projects, A, B, and C. Each of these projects requires a unit expenditure of Rs. 10

million. Suppose also that the marginal productivity schedule of each unit of

expenditure on the three projects is given as shown in the following table.

Going by the equi-marginal principle, the firm will allocate its total resource (Rs. 100

million) among the projects A, B and C in such a way that marginal product of each

project is the same i.e., MpA = MPB = MPC. It can be seen from the above table that

going, by this rule, the firm will spend 1st, 2nd, 7th, and 10th unit of finance on project A,

3rd, 5th, and 8th unit on Project B, and 4th, 6th, and 9th unit on project C. In all, it puts 4

units of its finances in project A, 3 units each in projects n and C. In other words, of the

total finances of Rs. 100 million, a profit maximization firm would invest rs. 40 million in

project A, Rs. 30 million each in projects B and C. This pattern of investment maximizes

the form’s productivity gains. No other pattern will ensure this objective.

The equi-marginal principle suggests that a profit maximizing firms allocates

MpA = MPB = MPC = … = MPN

If cost of project (COP) varies from project to project, then resources are so allocated

that MP per unit of COP is the same. That is, resources are are allocated in such

proportions that

The equi-marginal principle can be applied only where (i) firms have limited investible

resources, (ii) resources have alternative uses, and (iii) the investment in various

alternative uses is subject to diminishing marginal productivity or returns.
